Bolton Priory

HFF folks!

Bolton was founded as an Augustinian priory in the 12th century, situated on the banks of the river Wharfe. After the dissolution of the monasteries under Henry VIII most of the priory fell into ruin but the western half of the nave survived and is still in use a village church.

Bolton liegt am Fluss Wharfe und wurde im 12. Jh als Augustinerpriorei gegründet. Wie die anderen Klöster wurde auch Bolton unter Heinrich dem VIII enteignet und zerstört, nur der Westteil des Langhauses blieb erhalten und wird noch heute als Pfarrkirche genutzt.

Diese Stein-Zäune erinnern mich wieder an unsere GB-Rundreise vor vielen Jahren.
Und wenn man schon so viele Steine bewegen muss, um Weiden zu erhalten, dann baut man auch gleich Kirchen und Häuser daraus.
So hat man uns das damals erklärt...

Herzlichen Dank, Udo! In den Dales liegt der Kalkstein an vielen Stellen frei, da war es einfach:-) Das Kloster war aber viel früher als die Steinmauern, die Weiden wurden erst im 18. Jh (glaube ich) eingezäunt, da dann aber massiv.
