Whitby Abbey

Remains of a 14th century Benedictine Abbey which fell into ruin after Henry VIII's dissolution of the monasteries. Whitby Abbey suffered further damage from German shelling in WWI. At the same site a first monastery had been founded in 657 which was destroyed by Danish raids in the 9th century.

Ein erstes Kloster wurde an dieser Stelle bereits 657 gegründet, das aber im 9. Jh dänischen Überfällen zum Opfer fiel. Die jetzigen Ruinen gehen auf eine Benediktinerabtei des 14. Jh zurück, die unter Heinrich dem Achten 1538 aufgelöst (geplündert) wurde und verfiel. Im 1.Weltkrieg wurde die Abtei durch Treffer deutscher Schlachtschiffe nochmals schwer beschädigt.

Herrlich, das man es so in diesem Zustand sehen kann. Kenne ich noch nicht.
Der Rasen im Schiff ist mal ein ganz anderer Eindrück, wie man sonst von solchen sakralen Bauten bekommt.

Danke vielmals, Uwe! Solche Abteiruinen gibt es in Yorkshire so einige, inzwischen werden sie alle schön gepflegt und können besichtigt werden. Heinrich der Achte hat damals die Klöster alle aufgelöst und sich die Schatullen gefüllt....

Tausend Dank, Tanja! Was man hier nicht sieht- die Abtei liegt oben auf der Klippe über dem Hafen, eine Traumlage:-) 199 Stufen, um da hochzulaufen....Der letzte Tag in GB hatte das beste Wetter:-)

Many thanks, Amelia! If I had been traveling individually I would certainly have suggested meeting up! As it was, I was with an organized tour on a very tight schedule... This was our last day with the best weather by far. The forecast for the whole week was awful but mostly it turned out better- rain while we were in the bus, dryish when we were outside;-)

Thanks very much, Doug! We were lucky in the weather though I would have liked to be there at sunset instead of the middle of the day. A pity Whitby is such a long journey from Germany, they are having the Abbey illuminated end of October!

Hallo Gudrun, da in der Gegend war ich 1977 unterwegs während einer Interrail-Tour hoch nach Schottland. Da war aber das Dach noch drauf auf der alten Kathedrale....

Ne, Quatsch. Natürlich nicht. Neu ist mir allerdings, dass die Deutschen das herrliche alte Gemäuer fast platt gemacht hätten. Da sieht man's wieder: Überall dort, wo die Germanies waren, haben sie Trümmer hinterlassen.

Eine herrliche Ruine, da scheint ja sogar der Rasen regelmäßig wie auf einem Golfplatz gepflegt zu werden.

Schönen Dank, Günter! Das mit den Deutschen war mir auch neu, die haben da wohl wahllos geballert, denn kriegswichtig war die Ruine doch sicher nicht;-)
Du warst ein paar Jahre vor mir auf Interrail-Tour, ich war in den 80rn ein paarmal in Whitby- wir sind damals alle landschaftlich schönen Strecken abgefahren:-)

Fountains war dabei ( mein 3. Besuch), aber Rievaulx leider nicht. Aber da war ich immerhin schon einmal vor Jahren, oben auf der Terrace und unten bei der Abbey. Bei den schönsten Ruinen stimme ich dir voll zu!
