Reed Bunting - Emberiza schoeniclus

Reed Bunting - Emberiza schoeniclus
The Reed Bunting - Emberiza schoeniclus - or Common Reed Bunting, can be found not only in reedbeds (as its name suggests) but also in moorland and cultivated areas. In summer and breeding time the head and throat of the male are quite black with just a few white/brown flecks but, as you can see, in winter they show a much more mottled appearance in these areas. Common throughout Europe this sparrow sized bird will eat insects when breeding but their normal diet throughout the rest of the year is seeds. This one was seen at Pennington Flash, Leigh, Lancashire.
