Spry Shortening Ad, 1953

09 Jan 2013 1 2 262
"Pre-creamed homogenized" blah blah blah. The truly important questions are: Why is Mom's handbag made from a shower curtain? And why couldn't Sparky use the phone without taking off his collar and license first? From the September issue of Family Circle.

Canada Dry Wines & Liquors Ad, c1955

Uh, thanks. But really, after the whole New Years thing, I just came in for some aspirin and a cold pack. :/

Danish Modern Clipping, 1961

08 Jan 2013 260
Dated December. "Design Arne Jacobsen For Fritz Hansens Eft. Dronningensgade 3, Copenhagen, Denmark." I wonder if those skinny arms would help prevent cat-related scratches?

Danish Modern Clipping, 1961

Dated December. "Square Table and stools designed by Axel Thygesen for Interna, Thorstedlund, Fredrickssund, Denmark. Telefon Eva 8014." Not much in the way of knee room. I don't think I'd want to dine and drink sidesaddle. Better to just emulate the Japanese, get a cushion onto the floor and kneel instead.

Festive Buffet Cookery (5), 1965

Some other recipes included: Shrimp Curry, Tuna Casserole (for your less important callers who don't rate the Sole En Champagne, I guess), Fish Casserole Spanish style, Picadillo, and Meat Loaf Supreme. I think it's only this recipe that has Maraschinos all over the place, though. So that's good.

Festive Buffet Cookery (4), 1965

"...Mix half cup butter with flour thoroughly. When fish is baked, gently lift fillets, mushrooms, and carrots from the pan with slotted spatula. "Set fish on a plate to drain. Cover with foil to keep them warm. Drain the broth from the baking dish into a saucepan. Place over medium heat and add the butter and flour mixture little by little, stirring constantly with a wire whisk until sauce is smooth and thick enough to coat the whisk lightly. Stir in cream and lemon juice. "Spoon about 1 cup of the sauce over fillets. Sprinkle with chopped parsley and serve with lemon wedges. Pass the remaining sauce separately. Serves 6."

Some other recipes included: Veal Supreme, Veal Surprise (that's veal without orange or cherries), Veal Goulash, Veal Paprika, Veal Loaf With Anchovies, Veal Stroganoff, and Veal Rolls Marsala. (Oh, and they threw in a Paella and a Shrimp Newburgh for you weirdos who don't appreciate the glory that is-- VEAL!!)

Festive Buffet Cookery (2), 1965

07 Jan 2013 247
"...See that the shrimp are covered with sauce and bake 10 more minutes at 350. Serves six." Even without a date given, the color scheme alone would shout "SIXTIES!" Wouldn't it? Some other recipes included: Chicken Divan, Breast of Chicken With Wild Rice And Orange Sauce, Turkey Tetrazzini, Chicken Fricassee, Chicken Cacciatore, and Chicken Royale.

Compiled by Evelyn Loeb, with illustrations by Maggie Jarvis. No poetic intro here. Also, way fewer illustrations per book than there were in the Fifties. Still some nice work, though. Front and back covers of a 62-page hardback, published by Peter Pauper Press, Mount Vernon, New York.

Yeah, Image 3 brings back memories. I always felt pressed and stamped on at my last fifteen temp jobs just prior to sacking, too.

Clippings, enlarged to show detail. It's so rare to see anyone at work in these things, other than Mrs. America in her kitchen, of course. I had to do it.
