New Zealand Dotterel

Tuturiwhatu pukunui. This lovely little shorebird is only found in New Zealand and is endangered. It used to be widespread, but now only about 1700 birds remain, so I was delighted to see some on the beach at Shakespear Park.

In between having a look at a new resthome for my Mum and visiting her in her current home, I went and visited the Gannet Colony at Muriwai Regional Park. It was a nice place to unwind and just watch the birds and enjoy nature. Although it was the tail end of the breeding season, there were still some youngsters around (including some fairly newly hatched) and plenty of activity going on.
