The Royal Pavilion in Brighton, Sussex, taken from the gardens in the rear. Started in 1787 for the Prince Regent, who became king George IV (1811), and later extended (1815).

The Palace Pier, Brighton, Sussex, late October. A late Victorian amusement pier opened in 1899 to replace an earlier structure, the Chain pier, that collapsed in 1896.

Part of the land in the provincial park where this was taken was once owned by monks who kept orchards here. Some of the trees (or perhaps their descendants) still grow here semi-wild, and the wind-falls provide an abundant late summer harvest for the local deer who feast on the fallen fruit.

Sticky sage (Salvia glutinosa), a very aromatic plant with a slight lemon fragrance, grows very well in the shade. Popular with the bees.
