It's Chaenomeles Japanese quince they are edible although very hard, used for quince jelly or grated into stewed apple, in times past a bowl with them would be used as an air freshener, in Cornwall you may have seen the true quince a larger pear shaped fruit it's a bit cold for them here although I do someone who has one

I should have guessed. Had many such small trees / bushes in various gardens, alongside true quinces. They all went into the same quince recipes!!

I wondered what they were until I read your answer to Andy. I'm sure they are delicious served cold ;-) I am a little envious of the snow! Today is bright, sunny and cold down in Somerset.
Have a good Thursday Peter.

You might see quince jelly for sale at something like a church fete, difficult to describe but with trying I have made it in the past I think there is one liquid in the freezer, most of them are small this year. A light dusting of snow this morning but a bright cold day, I hope your day was pleasant Rosalyn

I used to give a few jars of my quince jelly to my Mum who lined the Christmas cake with it (delicious!).

It looks like ground cherries (''cerises de terre'' commonly called in Quebec) but, without its lantern-shaped envelope. We also make good jam in the fall. :-)
I didn't know the Chaenomeles Japanese quince... thank you for sharing, and beautiful photo with the snow ❇❇❇
