Dalmation Pelican (+ PiP)

Dalmation Pelican (+ PiP)
Another image of one of the pelicans at WWT Arundel plus another in the PiP.

The pelicans have their flight feathers trimmed annually to prevent them from flying off. This seems cruel but this species of pelican has declined greatly over the past 100 years. The most likely reason is habitat loss due to human activities such as the drainage of wetlands and land development. These ones are part of conservation efforts taking part throughout Europe.

Thank you Roger. The birds are captive in the WWT site and of course are fed all the correct food. The idea is that eventually (in this safe environment) these will breed and the young will be returned to the wild to perpetuate the species.

It's not the best of the WWT sites in my opinion, but still worth a day out! Take a picnic though If you're staying the day.........the café is very expensive and doesn't usually have much choice.
