Structural restoration of NER 70, for a private owner. Built as a private, or family, saloon in 1870 for the North Eastern Railway. It had a relatively short career, before withdrawal and disposal. It was eventually rescued from a location near Chester-Le-Street by the current owner in the 1970s.
We found several places with text written by the builders during 1870. As the marks made in pencil are somewhat faint, I did some basic manipulation of the images attempting to make them clearer The transcriptions were done from the original timber.

As a point of interest, the "Stirling Single" which was built as an express paasenger locomotive in 1870 for the Great Northern Railway (Not the NER) was photograhed whilst visiting Shildon recently. This is the type of express locomotive that might have hauled NER70.....
This is a current project. Working in stages as time and finances permit, please - check back to watch progress.
Spring 2014 :- Work is now underway on the next stage, starting with rebuilding the first of two external first class doors - the two second class compartment doors have followed.
The next task has been replacement of the external panelling and beadings, followed by a coat of primer.
Late 2016 :- over the last few months work has been carried out on fitting out the interior of the third class compartment. During 2017-18, similar efforts have carried out on the first class saloon panelling and window reveals were veneered to match the beading. In 2019 the toilet compartment was panelled to mirror the saloon, including a matching door, also the marble sink supports and "thunderbox" structures were built. [note the Thunderbox will be used to conceal a battery for the lighting.
This project is in hiatus following the death of the owner in early December 2019.
