Poor water quality / beach alerts [mainly due to sewage laden floodwater discharges, something that surfers against sewage monitor]
I strongly suspect that these poor water quality alerts are the result of waste water treatment plants being overwhelmed with flood/rain water from recent storms [Melissa, I'm looking at you]. Sadly, some plants discharge poorly treated effluent - even untreated sewage - more often than can be equated to storm rainfall events.

Normally, WWT plants have *some* storage designed for rain water, but it is limited, so if more arrives than can be stored / treated then it will be discharged "as is".
It would help if stormwater could be kept separate from grey/black water ... but that would involve a lot of investment in new pipework & tanks/ponds [/cynic/ and detract from the £££profits available for shareholders].
