The figure is shown "spiking" the cannon, ie driving a soft iron spike [nail] into the touchhole, thus preventing the cannon being fired. A good armourer could remove the spike, but that was difficult and time-consuming.
Glad to see that the three cannon have had new carriages provided, at long last, after being fenced off for months during nearby construction work.
The seat is one of several around the harbour, designed to draw attention to Whitehaven's maritime [whaling] history - and to make it less comfortable to sit on the back and put feet on the bit normal people use,
