Behind "The Edge" in Whitehaven, these decorated containers are reputed to hold supplies for "Coastal Activities" - I presume these to be seaside water-sports eg paddle-boarding or wind-surfing. I do like the theme, very reminiscent of the well-known "Tsunami" woodcut ... [I still find the visual appearance of this building to be less than appealing]

Pretty disgusted that the filtering of the Corkickle Tunnel outflow into Bransty Beck has been stopped. I presume that's on cost rather than environmental grounds ! It's almost three years since the iron oxide laden water became really noticeable. It's obvious to me, at least, that it is effluent draining from coal mine workings under Whitehaven. This makes it the Coal* Authority's [*now Mine Remediation] responsibility. Network Rail are currently [Oct 2025] planning out how they are going to fix the problems they have identified with & under Corkickle Tunnel - I suspect this is mainly flooded coal mine workings. In the meantime, and until further notice, rail replacement buses operate between Whitehaven [outside The Bransty Arch] & Corkickle Station... not my image : fair use & public information

"somewhere in the Lake District" - details to be advised ! Having done some research - this is over the River Calder, not far from Calder Abbey.

Bransty Beck [26th Sept 2025], at 18:15 ... It seems the "Siltbuster" is 'broken' and the rusty water is not being filtered. . I reported it to appropriate authorities as I didn't want that running all weekend, by the following morning the beck was back to crystal clear.

Storm "Eva" splattering the inner harbour. If you think that's good, just try the view outside ! But not as bad as other storms - IIRC the one in 2013 did some damage to the structure here, although no boats were harmed. The structure badly hidden by the spray / spume is actually the Sea Cadets building and lookout.

At least ten adult swans are floating just beyond West Strand. I haven't counted the mated pair that are currently feeding on the far side of the pontoon to which the boats are moored ...

Six juvenile swans - these cygnets are the first that I've seen in Whitehaven in 2025. I was mildly worried that the bird flu had meant disruption to the breeding, so I was pleased to see these. When I first looked, they were lined up and all were nibbling at the weed fringe ... but it took me a while to get the camera out & into action. The wall is the inner [town] face of Lowther Basin in the Marina at Whitehaven.

A drone produced this image of the Galeon Andalucia having windage problems when attempting to leave Whitehaven, at silly o'clock in the morning ie high tide. Between 03:00 and 04:00 16th July 2025. I believe that no yachts were harmed during this period, although I believe some new words were learnt. I wonder how easily that would have been handled in the good ol' days of warping ships out of the harbour ? not my image : fair use & public information

with *some* imagination, this little cabin cruiser seems to be scowling !

The width of this dry stone wall, and the lack of coping stones indicate that this wall is still acting as a consumption or clearance wall for the neighbouring field. The "wriggle" is to accommodate a "passing place" on the single track lane that allows access to the Wasdale Head Inn.

The least polluted corner ! --- The state of Queen's Dock in mid-June 2025, a few days after heavy rain had induced Bransty Beck to scour out it's bed / culvert of the ferric oxide [Iron Ochre] that has accumulated there, especially since November 2022. Apparently, even the discharged water was discoloured and it brought with it a lot of floating debris, most of which is now wandering around Queen's Dock, at the mercy of the wind. The dock walls, and boats, are now quite heavily stained orange. . The source has been determined to be mine-water coming out of former coal mine[s] flooding into Corkickle Tunnel, into Bransty Beck and then the harbour. Network Rail are planning a three week blockade to relay the live-expired rail in the tunnel from 30th August 2025, although they are denying responsibility for the pollution, I am of the opinion that replacing the ballast will allow it to re-start "filtering" the floodwater, the affect might not be seen immediately, but I do expect the Beck to clear eventually. Getting the harbour "clean" might take longer, as the marina will [probably] need a permit to discharge the "dirty" water if they want to do it quickly. Currently the practice of having the sea-lock fully open for long periods over high tide seems to be avoided.

Sandstone block in the parapet of the North Pier [Whitehaven], showing some interesting patterns from differential rates of weathering. These have highlighted the "current bedding" - the diagonal shadow [hollow] is along the line of a significant discontinuity of the bedding, it looks like there are five such features. The stones to the right block access to a now dangerous stairway.

If you look carefully past the multitude of stone walls, into the sky just above the pointed white top of the pontoon mooring bollard, you will see a series of narrow, thin clouds. They are "wave" kicked off by the bulk of Snaefell & the Isle of Man. I've seen this phenomenon of a range of hills kicking off ripples of wave clouds, in various places, butv this is probably the first time I've imaged it from here in Whitehaven.
