oad[23] - Soay ewes [SC178]
posted to SC178 - Nursery Rhyme.
Baa, Baa Black Sheep applies - the younger ones are very black, but go a bit grey with age.
Small flock of Soay ewes, no lambs this year [2023], despite their being - officially - a rare breed.
They responded to a "come and get it" call, but were disappointed we didn't have any sheep nuts !
[including the white one, she was sired by a local non-soay tup, hence her horns & fleece colour].

The owners made a decision not to breed this year, as they had a lot of other things going on. To breed, they usually "borrow" a good Soay tup, although that comes at a cost. At some future date, I think that they plan to expand their flock and acquire a breed tup, one with a good pedigree. That will require leasing more land ... the flock are currently in one of the hay fields. Most of the rest of the sheep - standard local breeds, with their lambs, are also taking up all the fields, including those which will be cut for hay.
