Briefly put, alcoholic beverages are unique among all the drugs that bumans and our early hominid ancestors have exploited on this planet for more than four million years. Their preeminence and universal allure -- what might be called their biological, social, and religious imperatives -- make them significant in understanding the development of our species and its cultures. ~ xi / xii
This unsteadiness actually occurs in several phases. Alcohol first diffuses into the gelatinous cupula in which the hairs of the hair cells are embedded. Alcohol makes the cupula less dense or lighter than the surrounding fluid, known in the endolymph. When someone lies down after having had a few too many drinks, the cupula will float upward a little bit, producing a spinning sensation. As time passes, alcohol starts to diffuse into the endolymph itself. Temporarily, the density of the endolymph and the cupula will return to their normal ratios and the spinning should abate. But don’t hop in the cr to drive hom yet -- this is one eye of the storm. As the culupa starts to clear the alcohol, it becomes more dense then the endolymph, sags to the bottom, and creates a spinning sensation against -- now in the opposite direction; ~ Page 184
