There is now almost instant communication between different countries of the world; a vigorous exchange of foods, styles, and music; and an ever-rising flow of goods internationally. But the divergence of incomes ensure that the poor countries of the world remain as exotic to the rich as they were in the seventeenth or eighteenth century. Even in as relatively prosperous part of the underdeveloped world as India, workers new to cities such as Bombay or Madras sometimes still sleep on the streets. Thousands live in improvised shacks without water or toilet facilities on public lands, or pavements, or along the edges of the commuter rail lines. In India as a whole in 2002 the average dwelling area per person was 84 square feet. (figure 15.7) ~ Page 327
