The growth of population contributed to the development rural areas. The poor in the countryside were eager to supplement their earnings from agriculture and other types of work, and capitalists from the city were eager to employ them, often at lower wages than urban workers commanded. Manufacturing with hand tools in peasant cottages grew markedly in the eighteenth century. Rural industry became a crucial feature of the European economy.
