Post modernism is a philosophical orientation that rejects the dominant foundational program of the Western tradition. It pronounces metaphysical realism dead with Hume’s critique, and it pronounces epistemological realism dead with the emergence of the social sciences. We simply cannot have what foundationalism tried to give us -- that is, a final vocabulary for speaking publicly and with assurance about truth and value. There are no absolute truths and no objective values. There may be local truths and values around, but none of them has the endorsement of things as they really are. All vocabularies for speaking of truth and value are contingent. All interpretations of the meaning of things are caricatures; there are no un-interpreted meanings. Foundational philosophy, as a genre, is defunct. God is dead, Zeus is toppled. Contingency reigns. There are external winching posts for bringing the self into adequation with the world, and there are no internal winching posts for bringing the world into conformity with the self. If it is winching posts we seek, then we haven’t taken the past two hundred years seriously. There is no Ur-language (original/proto language), there are no original meanings. All meanings are rooted in contextual soils, nourished by other meanings. There are no certified centrificers, only hierarchies of inference, without end. There is no right or wrong way to behold the world or ourselves. And beholding can be made to look bad by an alternative beholding. There is no right or wrong way to live, there are only alternative ways. There is no correct reading of a text or a picture or a dance. Whatever meanings a speaker intends necessarily defer to the meanings a listener infers. As for reality itself, it does not speak to us, does not tell us what is true or good or beautiful. The language is not itself any of these things, it does not interpret. Only do we, variously.

This is the artistic movement that rejected everything grand,along with universal stories and paradigms of religions, philosophy, gender, and capitalism that have defined culture in the past. . . . some of the finest minds of their generation – philosophers such as Jean-Francois Lyotard, Jacques Derrida, and Michel Focult – started to doubt whether the pursuit of truth through science was all it was cracked up to be. They vegan to wonder if you could know anything for sure. Were race and gender real or constructed by culture? Are those “master narratives” and structures that we take for granted – capitalism, communism, religion, government, even family – real? Or are they just something we’ve made up? Is the modern world just as fleeting as ancient Greece and ancient India? These intellectuals even wondered whether the way we use language is the only way it can be used – hence the unreadable nature of amy of their writing. A new way of thinking often called “Postmodernism,” emerged from these question. But the linguistic turn included similar notions such as post structuralism (doubting that intellectual and cultural structures are real) and deconstructionism (taking old ideas apart to determine whether they are real)

This new way of seeing things began in the world of art. Modern artists such as Jackson Pollock were famous for declaring that what they think their art means is what it means, and that’s that. The postmodern artists and America were fueled in the 1960s by the rebellions of women, people of color, and the groups we now describe is LGBTQ+ They were also reaching to the emotional status quo of the Cold War era. The artists rejected the modernist stance, proclaiming, “No, I will interpret your art as I see fit, thank you very much. Moreover, you can interpret my art as you see fit.” ~ Page 256
