. . . A man may purchase a “modern home,” having developed his architectural tastes through discussions with artists, other modern art enthusiasts, and his reading of magazines, ;but may expect his wife to cook the foods he and she learned to like while in slum tenements as members of immigrant families. Different standards apply to home and food consumption. House buying and home living, in fact, are not widely regarded as consumption. In similar vein, sociologists sometimes use the example of a man acting as a Christian on Sunday and a businessman on Monday, and they note that many men seem to be able to “dissociate” or keep in watertight compartments the different “role demands.” To ask whether some one is more an immigrant than a member of avant grade, or whether he is more a businessman than a Christian, is to raise pointless questions. When a man buys a modern house, he is acting as would others who share his terminology of perception and judgment. When he tells his wife not to experiment with the “American” recipes that stud and same magazines from whence he derived some of his best architectural ideas, then he is acting as do other who share his discrimination in food. ~ Page 153
