Lexicographers create definition for living. They do a great deal else, in compiling dictionaries, but that is their primary task. A good dictionary thrives on the brilliance of its definitions. They have to be clear, succinct, relevant, and discriminating. They can also be elegant, humorous, quirky, and memorable. Definitions, in short, involve imagination and creativity. Just as any other literary genera. Several, indeed, have achieved fame. Extracts from the famous dictionaries are present in books of quotations, sitting very comfortably alongside quotes from novelists, essayists, poets, and dramatists. ~ Page 33
