Just as mitochondrial DNA can be used to compare genetic deversity among species, it can also be used within a species to determine the degree of relati8olnship among individuals. Initially scientists focused on selected regions of human mitochondrial DNA. At the time, DNA =-sequencing methods were too laborious and expensive for them to sequence the entire mitochondrial genomes of multiple people. The three initial studies found the highest degree of diversity in people indigenous to sub-Saharan Africa

However, these studies suffered criticism, largely because they examined only small regions of mitochondrial DNA. By 2000, DNA sequencing methods were much more efficient and less expensive. That year scientists in Sweden and Germany published a study comparing the complete DNA sequences of the mitochondrial genome in people with worldwide geographic origins. Like the previous studies, this one found the highest diversity in Sub-Saharan Africa -- twice as high as the rest of the world combined! According to analysis of mit6ochondrial DNA diversity in light of Vavilov’s principle, modern humans -- Homo sapiens -- originated in sub-Saharan Africa. ~Page 109

The map in figure depicts only ancient dispersals, those that happened more than ten thousand years ago. More recent paths not indicated on the map include a Viking migration from Scandinavia to North America, dispersals to the Pacific Islands, and the large-scale migrations associated with colonialism, slavery, and immigration during recent centuries.

The national Geographic Society has initiated the Genographic Project, a long-term research effort that is substantially expanding the DNA database for indigenous people throughout the world to better define the histories and migration patterns of ancient humans ….. ~ Page 115
