Palazzo Salimbeni o Rocca Salimbeni fu edificato nel XIV secolo, ampliando un castellare della famiglia Salimbeni preesistente del XII o XIII secolo, appoggiato alle mura altomedievali.
Fu restaurato e rimaneggiato in stile neogotico dal 1877, ad opera di Giuseppe Partini, che demolì alcuni corpi e ne sopraelevò altri, aggiungendo strutture e paramenti in stile antico. Ancora nel Novecento fu condotto un restauro da Carlo Ariotti e Vittorio Mariani, quando furono rimaneggiati anche i palazzi laterali della piazza, che assunsero l'aspetto attuale.
Al centro della piazza c'è la statua dedicata a Sallustio Antonio Bandini, ad opera dello scultore Tito Sarrocchi.
