High Peak Railtour 2010

The "High Peak" railtour from Tyseley to Buxton was headed by 45305 and is seen arriving at Peak Forest. The lack of exhaust was very frustrating as the driver shut off as he had not had a clear view of the signal beyond the bridge.

Taking a drink

'Black 5' 44871 takes water at the Rawtenstall tower. Shortly afterwards whilst attempting to close the valve the chain fell off and landed on the fireman. This resulted in all the water draining out as there was no means of stopping it.

Lathkill Dale

A walk on a fine frosty day took me to the top of Lathkill Dale in Derbyshire. No river flows this high up the dale and the River Lathkill emerges from a cave around the corner.

On the hill

The Huanan Coal Railway is now just a memory but back at the end of November 2006 it was still busy bringing coal over the hills to Huanan. The climb from Lixin required banking using the locomotive from the train that was loading at the mine. This train was on the last big curve before the final slog to the summit where the banker would drop off and run back.

Head Quarters

London Road Fire Station in Manchester is a building that has been seeking a use for many years. Whilst neglected and derelict it still proudly announces its former role as headquarters of the Manchester fire brigade. The terracotta is by Burmantofts of Leeds. The Grade II* building was completed in 1906 and closed in 1986. Finally redevelopment is taking place with the building to be redeveloped with both leisure and hotel facilities.
