HFF Newport Wales October 1968

HFF Newport Wales October 1968
The huge mountain of scrap at Cashmore's scrap yard on East Dock Road in Newport dwarfs British Railways 3MT 2-6-2 tank 82031 waiting its turn to die. Bundles of boiler tubes are neatly stacked but the cylinders & steam chests from unknown engines litter the pile behind. This was my only visit to Cashmores and all the steam had gone by year's end.

A twist in the tale is that, although all of this class of locomotive were scrapped, today a group of enthusiasts are actually building a replica of a Class 3MT tank from scratch. 82045 is progressing well - see www.82045.org.uk/news/82045_news-feb26.html

HFF to everyone. A late posting but enjoy what's left of the day and have a great weekend.

This reminds me of a place we saw near or in The Forest of Dean some 30+ years ago. A steam scrapyard with dozens of locomotives lined up for the kill. Many already had parts missing and although nearly all were showing their past hard life's and age some looked to be almost new. I always remember one of the engines had a pleading note painted on the side of the boiler -"Please save me!" A heartbreaking moment for us. I suspect that one or two might have been saved but the rest - all put to sleep! - Thanks for sharing this my friend and the link too (good to know that their legacy lives on.)

Best Wishes and belated HFF. Herb

In Jamestown California there is a Locomotive Geriatric Center located at the Railtown 1897 State Historic Park. It is not as immense as the National Railway Museum in York, UK, but is worthy of a visit (and ride on a steam locomotive).
