Torpedoes on the move
Some of the iron production from the blast furnaces of Dillinger Hütte GTS is sent by rail as hot metal in torpedo wagons. These four torpedoes are heading for the Röchling-Burbach steelworks at Völklingen a few kilometres from Dillingen.
Schierke departure
The first train of the day departs from the station at Schierke and commences the long final climb to the summit of the Brocken. The is not an ideal location for morning photography as the sun does not reach the smokebox front of the locomotive.
Old style crossing
Shades of the DDR as a Trabant and a Lada wait for a train to cross the road outside Drei Annan Hohne.
Into the sunlight
A train of standard gauge mineral wagons on transporter wagons bursts out of the forest and into the sunlight approaching the tunnel above Steinerne Renne on the Harzquerbahn. It was still early and there was only just enough sun on the line to cover the loco and first wagon.
Reflections on the afternoon train.

Double Departure
Eisfelder Talmühle is the junction between the Harquerbahn and the Selketalbahn. This morning double departure saw parallel running with a freight on the left line towards Stiege and the daily through service from Nordhausen to Wernigerode to the right.
On the curve between Alexisbad and Harzgerode
A great vantage point to shoot the trains on this short branch line off the main Selketalbahn.
Climbing to Harzgerode

99 6101-2 climbs past the reservoir on the short branch from Alexisbad to Harzgerode on the Selketalbahn.

The road bridge over the station throat provides an excellent vantage point for this freight departure from Nordhausen on the Harzquerbahn.

Approaching Ilfeld viaduct
Just like the days of the DDR when double-headed coal trains ran from Nordhausen onto the Selketalbahn with coal for the power plant at Silberhütte. The sun has just crept high enough to reach the tracks as the train blasts towards the viaduct at Ilfeld on the Harzquerbahn.
Harz action
Early morning freight of loaded transporter wagons between Steinerne Renne and Drei Annen Hohne on the Harzquerbahn.
Wernigerode depot
The Harzquerbahn has provided a viewing platform adjacent to the depot at Wernigerode. For photography it is rather too close to the subject and makes for some significant distortion due to use of wide angles to capture the action. Nothing daunted, it does give a different view after perspective correction is applied.
Lining up for coal

Locomotives at the coal crane one evening at the Nordhausen depot of the Harzquerbahn
Nearing the summit
There is still plenty of snow about as an early afternoon train approaches the summit of the Brocken. The train is just about to pass over a snow covered level crossing used mainly by skiers.
Coal train

Double headed working of standard gauge coal trucks on transporter wagons approaches the Ilfeld viaduct on the Harzquerbahn.
