Garden mine

Garden mine
How about having your very own mine in the garden. In Andamooka your dreams can come true ................. or maybe not. This a typical small opal mine in the outback town. The shaft is just behind the winding engine with the jacked up axle. The framework allows a bucket/drum of rock to be brought up and tipped for sorting.

Or in Coober Pedy or White Cliffs a mine can be another room in your (underground) house. I've been in one belonging to a rel of a rel at White Cliffs.

There are a number of underground dwellings at Andamooka but I would say that it is a rather more basic place than Coober Pedy.

All the opal mining places are 'interesting' due to those attracted to the industry and that the opal fields are often on grazing properties, ie private land, so there are less legal restrictions on things such as building construction, and vehicles used within communities are often unregistered and unregistrable.

I have yet to go to that area of SA. We were going to do it 1979 after taking the old Ghan from Pt Augusta to Alice Springs but we went up to Darwin instead after looking round the Centre. The photos are all slides yet to be scanned. www.ipernity.com/doc/grahamh/24107527
