Longannet at dusk
Longannet power station seen over the oil refinery at Grangemouth. It had a generating capacity of 2,400 MW and is operated by Scottish Power. It was completed in 1973 and at that time it was the largest in Europe. In addition to coal it was capable of burning biomass, natural gas and sludge. It closed in March 2016 after missing out on a contract with National Grid.
