The Sunday Challenge: Art on the wall
In the 1930s my grandparents from my mother's side bought a piece heathland on the sandy soils in The Netherlands. In those days this kind of land was widely considered as uncultivated land ('woeste grond': 'wild grounds'). Their plot and neighbouring plots were planted with trees and summer houses were built, to enjoy the summer holidays.
Later, as the family grew, I, my family and my cousins and nieces, uncles and aunts enjoyed the summer and other holidays there. After my grandmother died, an uncle and aunt came to live there and after they moved because of age, the house and land was sold.
On the drawing the gate to the meadows (hayland) with a small meandering stream through it. Also the electrified railway which runs along the land. On this side of the railway the stream was never straightened as many other streams were, and the land along the stream is now protected landscape.
I don't know who made the drawing or when it was made, quite possibly one of my uncles. Three of them were creative: one of them became a well known photographer in Australia, another became urban planner and architect all around the world and another did flower arrangements in Holland. An aunt of me was also creative: she painted and drawed much.
But I do know the location and keep good memories of that place.
The drawing isn't framed yet. I turned the photo to black and white and changed the perspective a tiny bit as the camera wasn't exactly straight in front of the drawing.
