This is one of the fungi we came across on 24 August 2013, when a small group of us went on a Fungus Foray at West Bragg Creek, Kananaskis, W of Calgary. This was one of the very few times I got out this summer/fall to look for fungi. Hoping that next year will be a better year as far as finding mushrooms is concerned : )

Thanks to Ken Dies for the ID, Suillus tomentosus. Another ID suggestion was Boletus subtomentosus, given by Karel Bergmann of Calgary, who examined this particular specimen in the field.

A useful article on identifying the various Boletes in Alberta:

Great photo , Anne. I believe this is a photo of Suillus tomentosus not Boletus subtomentosus. This mushroom has glandular dots on the stalk, plus the apprised hairs on cap. Boletes have a net like covering on stalk. In B .subtomentosus it shows up quite readily.

Thanks so much, Ken! I used the ID given by the person who led the foray - he knows a lot about fungi, but there is always room for mistakes. Actually, I was even reading up about Boletes ('cos I know practically nothing about fungi!) and I did read about a "net-like covering", which puzzled me. I couldn't see anything remotely like a net in my photo. When I was reading, I have to admit I didn't include the info on Suillus, as I was already a bit overwhelmed with new info : ) Much appreciated!
