Beauty on a log

Beauty on a log
On 30 September 2013, I was out for a walk with birding friends at Sikome, Fish Creek Park. We had spotted a Great Blue Heron in the creek and while everyone else was watching it, I suddenly spotted this beautiful fungus growing on the end of a fallen log. After the walk, I went and got a bit closer, managing to get reasonably close photos of the Heron, too, which was a treat.

Chrissy, LeapFrog, have particularly liked this photo

Anne, this is a wonderful photo. What you have here is Hemipholiota populnea one of the most destructive wood loving mushrooms. This mushroom has changed names 3 times over the last few years. I guess the mycologists really do not know what to call it.
