It was -27C, -36C with windchill, yesterday morning, when a few of us went out with our cameras to the Sikome/Boat Launch/Hull's Wood area in Fish Creek Park. The light wasn't good for my point-and-shoot camera, but brightened up just as we finished, of course : ) The pair of Great Horned Owls down at Sikome was there, which is always a treat to see, even after quite a few years of seeing them. We were also happy to see or hear a Hairy Woodpecker, Downy Woodpecker, a few Chickadees, Black-billed Magpie, Common Raven, and Canada Geese, Mallards and Common Goldeneye down long the frozen edges of the Bow River. The vapour was rising from the river, making everywhere look just as frigid as it actually was. Several of these White-tailed Deer were grazing between Sikome and Hull's Wood. Bet they can't wait for some green shoots and leaves to feed on.
Today, it's -30C (-22F) at the moment (heading towards noon)! It's supposed to rise one whole degree to -29C this afternoon (windchill -42C). Expected to be -35C (-31F) tomorrow morning, soaring to a comparatively balmy -24C in the afternoon. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday all below -20C, soaring to a high of 0C for Saturday and then back down to -15C on Sunday. Next week should all be above 0C ... sigh. I really need a trip to Safeway for food, unfortunately, and I had planned to go for back X-Rays this afternoon. I didn't plug in my car yesterday, as I was planning to go back out again, so I know I should at least step outside and do that, IF I can get the front door and screen door open. Had a problem with it yesterday morning - the rubber strip along the edge of the screen door had frozen to the door step, ha! Oh, the joys of winter! Feels like the next Ice Age has begun.
