Pileated Woodpecker

Pileated Woodpecker
Thought I'd post this photo of a female Pileated Woodpecker not for its technical brilliance (lol!) but as a reminder of this sighting yesterday afternoon and also because I don't usually see a Pileated Woodpecker from quite this angle. As soon as I had taken this shot, off she flew. I had been standing watching her for a while, hoping that she would move up the tree another foot so that she'd be in a slightly clearer spot. No luck on that : ) Several people passed me on the path and of course stopped to see what I was looking at. They all looked as though they walked regualrly in the park, yet none of them had ever seen a Pileated Woodpecker or were even aware they existed.

For those of you who love the tiny Northern Pygmy-owl that I've been posting, wait till you see tomorrow's photo of it. I think I can guarantee you'll be shocked! Suspense? Sure, lol!
