Nature - Sierra Junipers
Folder: Nature
Mostly stands of huge trees on open slopes, ca. 8000 ft, in the Sierra Nevada. An unusual occurrence of a plant more typical of the semiarid scrub! We first learned of such occurrences at Rock Creek, in the Sierra Nevada, but have now seen them all over the eastern slopes of the Sierra. Giant Juniper

A mammoth juniper growing high above its usual range, probably ~10K feet. Rock Creek, Sierra Nevada, California, USA. We heard about this juniper stand at the local resort; it's on an exposed slope where they can do better than the usual trees you find at this elevation. It turns out this occurrence is not unique; we've since seen lots of huge junipers at high elevations on exposed slopes in the Sierra. I may get a chance to post a few of those pix along-- Map position is approximate.

Another stand of stressed-looking junipers high above their normal range. Elevation here is just under 10K feet (3048 m). And we've just been thru a sleet storm! Off the Hilton Lakes trail, above Rock Creek, Sierra Nevada, California.
