It's a representative of "large junipers growing anomalously at high altitude", on which I have a whole album:

We'd first heard about such specimens at Rock Creek, in the Sierra south of Mammoth, but as we got our eyeballs calibrated (as a prof of mine used to say) we see them everywhere! They seem to occur where it's just a bit too dry for the conifers, and some get enormous indeed.
