Vintage First Communion

First Communion is when Roman Catholic children first take full part in the Mass by taking "Communion" (going up to the alter and eating the consecrated bread given out by the priest) along with the rest of the congregation. Boys would just wear their usual "Sunday best" but it has long been a tradition for girls to wear a white dress and veil (women were expected to wear some sort of head covering in church back in the old days, anyway, wlthough by my mother's time usually a hat or scarf sufficed) as white symbolizes innocence. This goes back much further than the relatively recent practice of brides wearing a white dress and veil, which as I understand it originated in the 19th century from the First Communion attire, not the other way around.
