New goods for the toko Nieuwe Wereld
Thanks to the wonders of international trade, we can have goods from the other side of the world.
Toko is a shop selling food and products from Asia (and/or Surinam). The word came via in the Dutch East Indies/Indonesia, there it means shop in general, it can be modified for specific shops. The word apparently comes from the Chinese. The Dutch dictionary says: “Originally probably a Chinese word (t'u-k'u, dial. Amoy t'ó-k'ò) meaning ‘kind of cellar’, ‘storage place’ and hence applied by Chinese merchants to a shop connected to it.”
