Longish hair is very popular amongst students over here and Pro Patria isn't official army (and even in the official army you can have long hair).

We had a conscript army, so it was difficult to keep out changing social attitudes to personal freedoms. We were about the only country which allowed long hair I think. Nowadays we have a professional army and most of the people who go into the army keep their hair short I think.

Your Dutch friend might have been top-heavy with all that extra hair, might have caused him to tip over.

Note the word "might". There might be a relationship between long hair and falling over after a parachute jump, but I think the relationship is rather spurious, certainly not strong enough to shave off hair.
