This set really awakens Christmas memories, Alan. Woolworth's was an important part of this season for generations. If people these days have a hard time understanding that, and are inclined to think "It's just an old store", tell them to imagine Christmas without amazon. They may sort of understand.

Ah, that's a good analogy--Christmas without Amazon! How would we manage! Woolworth's was a standard, and I also recall Grants, Murphy's, Nichols, Jamesway, Two Guys. I was surprised to find that Wikipedia has documented some of these--see its list of defunct retailers of the United States, for instance.
