I intended to airbrush him out completely, then realised that he added interest to the picture, so I just gave him a new and tramp-like face. Its real owner, contrary to appearances, is an ex-public schoolboy and a classicist.

I thought tramps always carried a red and white spotted handherchief on the end of a stick.

Yes they do. But rather than "tramp-like", I really meant "yokelish" or "eccentric local character".

I've met a great many eccentrics in my life, but I've yet to spot one of those hankies.

To make him look more yokelish I've removed his spectacles.
