Belatedly, I realised that I'd taken another shot, there and then (with the figures in it) which mercifully was still on the memory card. It evidently was taken with the zoom at a slightly wider setting, and this I agree makes a more pleasing composition, despite (like the other) having been taken in a hurry with the sun going in and out and cars and figures constantly intruding. But these two figures I think are ideally placed and add life to the scene. And I happen to know those people - they're in my walking group - and they've been sent a copy.

Perhaps the brickwork doesn't have the late afternoon glow of the earlier one, but the composition is better, and the figures are, as you say, ideally placed.
