Big Bang

25 Aug 2018 83 98 812
Mamaroneck, NY Note: This abstract represents the immediate aftermath of the Big Bang that started everything in the universe. The various shades of orange and yellow represent warmth and heat, the blues and purples represent cold, the green and blue orb represents the Earth (the blue water, the green land with its vegetation) while the circular grill represents our sun. All the different broken pieces represent the expansion of the universe as debris including stellar dust, ice, and organic compounds from the Big Bang expanded in all directions. The tiny white shards represent the countless stars that make up our universe and the face represents life. LOVE AND ENERGY FOR PAM'S RECOVERY PAM JOHNSON www.ipernity.com/home/pamj

All You Need is Love

04 Aug 2018 98 137 1339
Mamaroneck, NY Note: The title comes from a discarded coffee cup whose powerful message takes the title of John Lennon’s hit song, All You Need is Love. It was performed on live television when the BBC linked five continents together for the first time in 1967 using various satellites for the One World broadcast. The Beatles performed this epic song at the conclusion of the broadcast that reached 350 million households in what is described as “the greatest single moment in the history of popular music.” [1] The lyrics are timeless and universally inspirational – “There’s nothing you can do that can’t be done… No one… that can’t be saved… You can learn how to be you… All you need is love.” Dreams and aspirations are not impossible and individuality is something to be treasured. And yes, love is all we need based on the words of 12th Century CE Sufi Poet Farid ud Din Attar – “On [l] ove [we] all depend.” This abstract uses vibrant reds and oranges to symbolize the power of love, discarded garbage including a cup that makes up the title, an unused soggy Valentine’s Day heart that symbolizes love itself, a circle to depict the continuous eternal nature of love and the fact we are one world and one human race and a broken plastic casing that resembles a staircase to transcend violence, hate and all the evils that remain all too common. Finally, the abstract includes a signature happy face since love is the origin of the universes and life, the sole necessity of our sustenance, the ultimate driving force of good, and the only example of unbroken, lasting perfection in an imperfect, transient and broken world. _____ [1] All You Need is Love History DKR Products. 5 August 2018. www.beatlesebooks.com/all-you-need-is-love

Summer Joy

24 Mar 2018 80 108 1343
Mamaroneck, NY Note: The colors are intended to project warmth and heat fueled by the shining sun above. The vertical strips are used to create a quilt-like surrealist effect while the grated, flowing lines are meant to simultaneously represent desert sands as well as metal grating from an urban setting -- both environments subject to intense summer heat. The pieces of the copper tray are formed to symbolize a large container of refreshing water represented by the cooling purple colors.

Millstone

02 Jun 2018 90 176 1513
Mamaroneck, NY Note: The lower disc represents a tiny millstone. Millstones do not have to represent a heavy weight or burden. They can symbolize freedom. With agriculture (that began ≈ 9600 BCE), people have been liberated from hunting. We have more time to pursue our dreams and fulfill our potential – hence the smile. Also, visualization and interpretation are subjective and limitless – hence the abstract background and colors meant to represent life, beauty, and vibrance. As I am an optimist, I seek that silver lining. Thus, there is even hope for the Babylonian women in Isaiah 47:2 – “Take millstones and grind flour.” This hope is universal – “Never give up; go on with life!”

Mamaroneck, NY Note: I deliberately used "white space" to go against conformity and chose the colors to project warmth. I also bled the colors from the center of the broken lp so the mind could complete the circle that is missing the right edge.

Sunflower Still Life

15 Oct 2017 93 105 1683
Mamaroneck, NY Note: With October 2017 on pace to become the warmest October on record in New York City and its metro area, the sunflowers and summer colors are fitting. At the same time, this is one of the better years for Monarch butterfly migration. I counted 1351 Monarch Butterflies over a 7 hour period. The late and heaviest migration here since 1978 is due to the unusually warm weather and the fact that Hurricanes Jose and Maria lingered off the East coast for weeks disrupting and delaying bird and butterfly migration for between one to four weeks. With Monarch Butterflies still being reported in Toronto, the migration could still last another one to two weeks extending into November. At the same time, with Verizon beginning to dismantle Flickr -- first the removal of stats, now the discontinuation of photo book and wall art options -- Borischa Krautmo wrote a great article, How free is a free site that illustrates why it is more important than ever that sites like Ipernity are run by the members who are interested in promoting our passion rather than commercialization or bottom line results. Sleepy Hollow

13 Oct 2017 76 99 1444
Sleepy Hollow, NY …[T]he place still continues under the sway of some witching power. …[G]ood people… are subject to trances and visions, and frequently see strange sights, and hear music and voices in the air. …[T]he Headless Horseman… patrolling the country; and, it was said, tethered his horse nightly among the graves in the churchyard. Washington Irving (1783-1859) Though modernity seems to have pushed the supernatural aside, telltale signs still emerge in an around the original churchyard. Leaves are bleached by white mold and gravestones are encrusted by an eerie array of lichens. At the same time, a perturbing quiet still lingers around the Headless Horseman’s stream and its dense foliage that hides evil’s presence. Note: Headless Horseman image with Pumpkin captured from a t-shirt hanging on display in Sleepy Hollow.
