Pam, This photo wasn't worth anything for 15 years until the development of AI that could reverse the lighting to bring out the features and colors of the owl. Technological advancement really helped. :)

Well said Pam. Every technological advancement brings fear and in the end it all turns out all right. Similar to the industrial revolution, I'm optimistic any disruptions (which seem to be over-exaggerated since everyone wants to blame AI for job reductions when economics and performance likely play larger roles) will be temporary at worst as people learn new skills and how to optimize a collaborative experience with AI. In the end, standards of life will likely improve greatly and costs, which seem to be such a global concern today, will be reduced by improved efficiency and workmanship.

Yes, Jocelyne it's the same owl. Now with technology another thing not to have to worry about is perfect lighting. It can be fixed later. Just capture the subject! :)

AI -I find somewhat scary William. Not that I don't do such things with my normal photo editors occasionally but to ask something to do it just seems dead wrong somehow! -Can't but like the improvements though so well done for this Mk2.

Thank you Herb. Sometimes the requests have to be simple and direct and in the end it's the photographer's job to ensure AI didn't hallucinate. Right now ChatGPT with its improvements has become best as making such corrections when lighting and focus are not ideal and without hallucinating. As AI continues to evolve, the hallucinations will ultimately be eliminated. Just think in its infancy AI was incorrect more than 80% of the time with mathematical proofs and calculations. Now it's making mathematical discoveries!!! Let's just hope it's not used for malevolent purposes such as hacking, creating viruses and unleashing wars.

The moats that once protected professional-quality image-making such as expensive equipment, technical training, specialized software, studio access, years of trial and error, and conditions that impose constraints on photography are being eliminated.

Thank you Don for adding this insight. AI definitely is leveling the playing field in photography. Before many of the great shots were reliant on expensive equipment. For example my best friend was at a hawk watch and he inquired how one of the members taking a photo shoot consistently placed in the top three. He point to a super-large lens that likely had built in lighting. He said it gave him an advantage to get clear and often dramatic close-ups. It turns out he works for ESPN and the lens has a price tag of $20,000!

Consequently before AI, were all the legendary photographers truly legendary had others driven by the same creativity and imagination not be limited by their budgets -- or were they simply wealthy people make the best of a profession/hobby they enjoyed?

In any event, creativity and imagination going forward will play the dominant role in photography and that is a good thing. The oligopoly has been shattered by AI.

Great shot. I've yet to try AI on images. I used to use Photoshop to try to achieve the type of results you have here and although it was an interesting exercise I did find it time consuming and not always successful given my ability!

I think AI would especially useful for photos of loved ones when for some reason or another the lighting just isn't right and their faces are dark.

I wouldn't call it a "failed" photo. I would consider a photo in waiting since I didn't have the advanced lighting equipment to illuminate the owl at the time. 15 years later AI has provided this lighting and the photo is so much better than I ever could've expected. I'm happy I never deleted it -- mainly because this was my first attempt at capturing an owl in the wild and since then I haven't even as much as seen another one. I'll try this winter and see what happens.

‘Failed’ perhaps doesn’t really capture what I meant to say; it’s more a case of not being able to make good use of it, because technically it wasn’t possible to do any better at that moment.
But indeed I usually delete photos like that, but as your example shows, that might be a mistake.

I can see that AI has done a good job here William but I am sure that this can be done with many photo editing programs.
I am very anti AI and will not use it but we all have our own opinions, I remember when digital photography first started catching on and many people said then they would never use it, I still think film has the edge over digital capture but digital is so quick instead of waiting for film to be developed.
As for AI I have even changed my browser to Vivaldi which will not support or use AI.

Thank you James. Just an fyi, I was never able to reverse the lighting with the digital editing programs I tried. All they did is brighten the image or bleach it out.

I'm using a 20 year old version of photoshop elements and the re are controls for lightening shadows and darkening highlights, but as I say William it is personal choice.
