Post 9/11 America

Post 9/11 America
Ground Zero, New York, NY

Post 9/11 America is a country the Founding Fathers would not recognize. Thomas Jefferson would undoubtedly declare it was time for the “tree of liberty [to be] refreshed.”

Sad to say, Post 9/11 America is a country where one no longer enjoys a right to privacy (conversations are recorded and virtual and real movements are tracked – George Orwell’s 1984 has been realized), the system of “justice” is rigged such that the outcome is predetermined, “choices” are imposed with threats of punishment, an over militarized police force carries out extra judicial race-based executions with impunity, religious liberty is under attack, the press is intimidated and threatened, people are profiled, immigrants are viewed with suspicion (if not outright contempt), the constitution is an archaic relic that is ignored, and egregious acts of systematic torture are committed to supposedly protect lives and protect national security! These appalling crimes against humanity are UNACCEPTABLE and can NEVER be JUSTIFED under any circumstances!

This is not the America that had once served as a moral beacon for the world and land of opportunity. It is not the country I grew up loving. Hopefully the latest disclosures will be a catalyst for constructive reform, positive change, restored liberty and the establishment of a system of impartial, equitable justice.

To be silent is to be an accessory. To be silent is to share the same guilt of the many good people in Germany who were either too afraid or apathetic to protest and condemn the evils of the Nazi regime of not even a hundred years ago. To be silent is to encourage further encroachments against individual freedom, additional acts of injustice and even greater crimes against humanity. May my collage cry out and condemn these un-American, treacherous evils!

I too am shoulder to shoulder with you.

I am English.. and have dual citizenship (which I earned no easy way ) Frankly.. it scares the hell out of me living in this country. I have lived all over the world and never ever been afraid as I am here.

Thankyou william.. i stand with you.. I too will NOT be silent.

Stay strong Pam! Hope the erosion against civil liberties can be reversed as people realize the pendulum has swung to far and we are becoming our own worst nightmare.

IT must always denounce what is not right,
otherwise it will be at the expense of individual freedoms.

Thank you everyone for your support. Usually I don't get political. As a member of Amnesty International, I'm used to writing letters re: victims of torture and human rights violations in other countries. But for state sponsored torture to be so systematic here, it became too much. I cannot and never can accept torture against anyone no matter how bad a person they might have been. It was just so disgusting reading the Senate reports. The other attacks on civil liberty are also very disturbing. Citizens are not terrorists nor enemies of the State.

p.s. Sadly, it's even become more common for me to be told "no photos allowed" in public places of all things merely because some building or something can be seen!

Powerful images and important commentary. This is an example where policy, skewed by fear, diverged markedly from the aspirational principles on which the U.S. was established. Hopefully, these revelations will lead to reforms and the necessary healing. For now, there is a real need to repair the national reputation.

fear ...

to rule with fear and not listen,
not see, not be aware ... fear . . .
acts of terrorism we are witnessing ... fear ...
it is a difficult decision many find themselves addressing ...
when we speak, see and hear on a level playing field
then perhaps we can make headway,
sadly ... fear divides, fear of the unknown . . . I fear ...
alas, human nature is full of mistrust ...
lessons not learnt, lessons we hope would never be repeated again . . .
I fear . . .
I salute those who are brave and try to make changes . . .
I fear sadly they are brushed aside and not listened too
perhaps those who rule with fear are indeed in fear themselves ....

*

your picture is a brilliant piece of creativity that should not be feared
but applauded ... ;-)

William Sutherland club has replied to Dida From Augsburg
True with regard to erosion of civil liberties and tolerance. Add torture and it's hard to change the flags. Can't let the US off the hook without prosecutions of the criminals who engaged in these crimes against humanity and when Dick Cheney defends such sickening crimes.

Thank you for shining a light on this subject, William. Your photo collage succinctly illustrates the erosion of freedom in our country. It is a subject near and dear to my heart. I am saddened that more Americans seem to be more concerned about the Sunday night football game than in the fact that their government representatives have stopped representing them. By the time they wake up, it may be too late.

I couldn't have said it better. It seems that now politicians -- democrat and republican alike merely promise what people want to hear and then do what they want when in power -- forgetting about who elected them. :(

Your picture says it all. I am an old woman now and appalled at the direction in which society has developed. Not just in the US but in Europe and the UK. Sometimes I wonder if it has always been like this but if, in the past, it was hidden. I hope not.
