I can smell the salt air.....I WISH !!

I've enjoyed the discussion on Explore enormously. Reminds me of all the endless threads on Flickr. My feeling is that photos are only properly appreciated by the person who takes them so we are never going to be satisfied by gismos like Explore or by human judges either. Camera club competitions cause just as much griping as Explore does. We seem to seek approval and are not pleased if we don't get it. I get on Explore quite often and was mildly miffed to discover I worked at being popular to get there. I like looking at other people's photos and I try hard to be truthful and positive in my comments. It's useful to look at a photo and search out its good points. Explore I regard as a lottery. Getting in is a pleasant surprise. I appreciate it and the nice comments but I take it all with a large pinch of salt. There are wonderful photos on ipernity that hardly get commented on at all. Maybe those people are doing what I try to do. Learning to use their eyes and their camera to take the best pictures they can. Being themselves and not bothering so much about approval and what others think. Right ! Having got that off my chest, I'm off for a late Sunday breakfast.

first: "explore" worked in a completely other way some years before - at this time it was ruled by algorithms, just by stars and comments in a short time. the iper staff changed this in its own special way: nowerdays stars and comments aren't such important, the activity of the member and the taste of the staff are more important... so, the frontpage isn't a mirror of the taste of the members anymore, just a little bit...

second: i don't understand the way to discuss several issues with such a behaviour. i may critisize a photo, but i may do it in a respectful and pollite way. this kind of "critics" (and especially the chosen words) shows more about the critisizing author and his personal problems with respect and tolerance than saying something about the photo and its quality.

edit: i see that the comment i answered to is erased, so, william, you may also erase mine now, because there's no impertinence anymore here... ;-)
