St Laurence-in-Thanet Church
| |
|
|
|
Like most of the medieval churches in Thanet, St Laurence was founded as a chapel of ease to Minster Abbey. The church was probably founded shortly before the Norman Conquest, around 1062, making it the oldest building in Thanet apart from the Abbey itself.
The earliest parts of the church are built of Caen stone, favoured by Norman masons. Late additions are in local flint. The original church was quite simple, consisting of just a nave and tower, but this expanded in the 12th and 13th centuries to include a chancel and side aisles. In 1439 the tower was struck by lightning and had to be rebuilt. Curiously, the townsfolk raised the tower, making it even more likely to be hit by lightning, but thankfully nothing so unsettling occurred!
Queen Victoria worshipped at this Church when on holiday in Ramsgate.
It stands in St Lawrence High St (notice the spelling difference, an error centuries ago that has been retained) It is now one of the busiest corners in Thanet!
The Supermarket is a 21st century building and the pub is 18th century but the exact date is unknown

Barham Church (St Johns)

Part of the Village of Barham leading to the Lychgate of St John's Church, the green copper spire towers over the houses. A very pretty place not far from Canterbury.
The name Barham was spelt Bioraham in 799, from Biora (derived from Beora, a Saxon chief) and Ham ("settlement" or "homestead").

St Pancras Church Coldred
| |
|
|
|
Coldred comes from the Old English ‘col’ meaning ‘coal, especially charcoal’ with ‘ryde’ as a ‘clearing’; therefore, a ‘clearing where coal is found or made’. The Domesday Book records Coldred as Colret.
Coldred parish church is dedicated to Saint Pancras, one of only 6 such dedications in the country.
The Normans built the Church in the 11th century, within the newly constructed Motte and Bailey castle which was built by Bishop Odo of Bayeux, half-brother to William the Conqueror. An unknown founder cast a bell in the 14th century, which split in two in 1939. The two cell church remained much the same for the next 500 years.
There was some restoration done by the Victorians.
The uneven ground around the church is caused by the remains of the castle mentioned above, many Roman artefacts have been found in the surrounding area.
Coldred, at nearly 400 feet (122 m) above sea level, is one of the highest places in East Kent

Spring is sprung!
These were gifted to me by a neigbour who lives a few doors away, He said they were autumn flowering violas, so I put them in a pot and they stayed out all through that snow and ice we had. He passed away on the friday and I looked in the pot (on the Monday) and they had bloomed, they are of course Pansies. So these 2 are now called Bryan.
