Le chaos de Montselgues.
Chaos granitique
Sur le plateau de Montselgues, les crêtes sont jonchées d’énormes blocs de granite arrondis. Ce relief est bien connu en Bretagne ou sur le Mont Lozère. Il s'agit d'un chaos granitique ou relief en boules. Fissuré lors de son refroidissement et fracturé par les mouvements tectoniques, le granite est altéré par la circulation de l’eau dans ses fractures. Petit à petit, les minéraux les plus fragiles comme les micas, sont oxydés et hydratés et disparaissent transformés en argile. La roche se désagrège alors et se transforme en sable riche en quartz et en feldspath. L’eau circule dans ce sable et continue de transformer activement en profondeur le granite sain en granite altéré (ou arène granitique). En surface, le ruissellement entraine le sable vers le bas de la pente, mettant alors à nu les blocs de granite sains qui n’évolueront alors que très peu. Ces blocs de granites sains forment alors les fameux chaos
