That are not trees Dave. That are the flowers of those agave plants on the ground. Something more about them here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agave_tequilana
But of different varieties people made ropes (out of the fibres of the leaves).

:)) Those trees are flowers of the agave, also called century plant because it blooms only once in a very long lifetime, then they die. Before they die, however, people in Mexico use the blue agave to make tequila and other types of agave to make mezcal. This might interest you: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tequila
