Peter, you have just reminded me that my late mother had some souvenir placemats from a 'Lower Slaughter' . This seems an odd name for a town. What is the origin of the name?

Lower Slaughter is just down the road from here. Apparently the name comes from old English 'Slohtre', which has nothing to do with killing things and means, simply, 'Muddy place'.
