I well remember learning about these at university, and the way James Watt built on the idea with a separate condenser, double action, and (a particular favourite of mine) parallel motion, thus enabling the change from at atmospheric engine to one driven by steam pressure...
Unfortunately this one was out of action with a 'worn out' boiler.
