Valdemanco beehives

Stolen???? Incredible... here not yet but maybe one day too...

Yes, I was amazed too, Isabel but the bar owner seemed an honest and sincere chap so I had no reason to doubt him!

It happens here recently around 400,000 were stolen from Tresillian House near Falmouth but they have started flying back home

I know Tresillian House, Peter but didn't know they kept bees, although it doesn't surprise me. So yes, they obv do have enough value to make it worth someone's while to half-inch the hives!

Pretty sad when honeybees are that valuable!

I was told this back in 2011, Steve and it has puzzled me ever since!

Stealing beehives is unfortunately widespread.
A stroke of luck you were able to discover and photograph some here in this remarkable place.

I rarely follow paths (only if I have to!) so that is how I stumbled across these hives high above the village!

Beautiful light and a lovely shot Andy. I was surprised to read about the theft of the beehives. I would have imagined that was a risky business! It is quite sad to have to go the great lengths of hiding them.

It made me think a bit more about what both the bees and the locals have to go through to keep safe!

I really like this image Andy...........the hives look very sturdy and they seem to blend into the rocky environment very well. Such a shame they have to keep moving them around.

Bees are such great friends of humankind as you know, Keith that this awful crime traumatizes ME!
I know how proud the villagers are of their local honey. I bought a couple of jars once, not for me - honey is forbidden due to my diabetes - but for my sister and my girlfriend who both pronounced it delicious.

In Portugal too and beehives from Spain are placed in Portugal!

I also discovered them years later in another location but the setting wasn't so attractive for a) thieves and b) photos!

What a shame that they had to hide these beehives. When we are all trying hard to encourage wildlife to rekindle life, to have some people just taking them away. So wrong.

Terrible to have to move beehives because of thieving.Is there a way one can find those thieves?

Yes, it's a terrible shame! I don't have any more info than what I mentioned above, I'm afraid. I don't know if the thieves are rival villages, international organizations (unlikely, but I just don't know), or what!

Well apparently it is! But it's not for me (diabetes). My girlfriend and my sister's family (both in Madrid) enjoyed the jars I bought for them!

I like the glimpse of the distant winding road in the V gap between the boulders. Bee hive thefts, and a general decline in bee population and supplies of 'local honey' are present where I live, also.

Yes, it's a worldwide problem, which was much discussed a couple of decades ago but I haven't heard more about declining bee populations recently. I think it's still a major worry though.
