Carn Brae granite

Carn Brae granite
On the left, possibly a menhir (standing stone) once, and certainly used as a gatepost more recently.

Oh this is a gorgeous picture. I love the colours of the grass and plants. How interesting that that standing stone has since been a gatepost!! It looks like it's on a cliff, so why the gatepost?

Thank you, Jenyy!
Carn Brae is an inland hill and there is an ancient settlement site on it. It was fortified at one point and this stone was part of a gate in the fortifications. Whether it was previously a menhir, I have no idea but at least one local history writer thought it possible.
Anyway, there are many ancient cliff top settlements and with gates, many of which were heavily fortified against attack.

Thank you, Roger. I feel this could represent any of the granite moorland scenes in the West of England!
